Why Sulfate Free?
Let’s talk sulfates!
Why do most stylists tend to recommend a good quality sulfate free shampoo and conditioner?
First off what is a sulfate?
A sulfate is a harsh detergent found in many types of soaps and even some toothpaste! Most sulfates found in personal care products are either sodium laurel sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. These detergents are known to strip moisture and natural oils away from skin and hair. Some believe this may also contribute to the fading or stripping of hair colors!
Why are sulfates a problem?
Sulfates are often irritants to the skin and eyes. Causing dryness, redness, itching, and other issues. Many people are allergic to sulfates which can also cause issues such as chemical burns. Sulfates are cheap and effective. Personal care companies often use them to save money. Along with other lower quality ingredients.
Many people dislike sulfate free products because they do not lather the same as sulfate products. But don’t be fooled! Just because it doesn’t lather as much doesn’t mean it isn’t cleaning! This is why your stylist will recommend shampooing twice each time you clean your hair. The first time through loosens the dirt, and the second times allows that lather and deep clean you are looking for.
Always discuss with your stylist what shampoo and conditioner may be best for you!
